In the global pursuit of sustainable food, land, and water systems, policymakers in many developing nations face the complex task of balancing the benefits of livestock production with its environmental and health implications. Using tools co-generated by the CGIAR Foresight and Metrics, and the Sustainable Animal Productivity Initiatives, Livestock Master Plans (LMPs) aim to provide country-specific and evidence-based decision support for optimizing the role of livestock in improving livelihoods, food security, and nutrition.

Guiding livestock investment and policy for sustainable development

Since 2013, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has co-developed LMPs with policymakers and development partners across countries in Africa and Asia to strategically plan their livestock sectors using foresight analysis and policy tools. By leveraging a 15-year sector-wide strategy and five-year commodity-specific investment plans, LMPs guide policymakers and stakeholders in prioritizing sustainable development initiatives. These initiatives aim to drive economic growth, enhance food security, create employment opportunities, and reduce poverty, all while ensuring the long-term viability of the livestock sector.

The integration of foresight analytics not only addresses chronic underinvestment in the livestock industry but also fosters evidence-based decision-making at the national and local levels, ultimately advancing the development goals of livestock-dependent economies.
